Book adaptations are helping young artists to achieve a qualification.

Year 9, 10 and 11 students at Burnt Mill Academy are working towards the Trinity Arts Award.

Working with partner Little Parndon Primary Academy, the students are turning their younger peers’ books into live performances.

The books chosen for adaptation are How To Train Your Dragon, Peace At Last, The Moonshine Dragon and Ironman which will be performed on World Book Day, March 1.

Phil Watson, lead practitioner of drama, said: “We asked our primary partner what books they were studying in literacy with a view to adapting them into a play to perform for them. We are supporting the primary curriculum by bringing these books to life

“It’s an ambitious project as the books they are studying contain lots of fantasy elements and special effects. Students are making dragon heads, an Ironman suit and puppets to help them to act out the stories.

“To meet the Trinity Arts Award brief, students have had to work independently in teams and plan their own rehearsals. They will get to experience what it is like to perform for real for their young target audience. They have taken on a variety of roles, including actor, director and designer.”

The Trinity Arts Award is a year-long project-based course which is an alternative to a GCSE and requires students to explore the arts.
