SEND provision is "uplifting"

SEND provision is "uplifting"

Posted: 19th March 2018

The work our school does to support children with special educational needs has been described as “uplifting”.

The Rev Jokey Poyntz, team vicar at St Mary's Little Parndon, was keen to see how Burnt Mill Academy nurtures its students with SEND – special educational needs and disabilities.

During a visit, the Rev Jokey wanted to find out how the school ensures the smooth transition of students from Key Stage 2 into Key Stage 3 with the help of SEND co-ordinators and stepping stones to prepare them for the next stage of their education.

The visitor met with students with SEND to ask them questions about their experiences of Burnt Mill and the support they receive.

Benjamin Eva, assistant SENDCo and drama teacher, said: “The Rev Jokey Poyntz was keen to see how we enrich our students and provide high expectations for all to smash through barriers to learning.

“We strive to remove labels and focus on achieving the best for all of our students and having high expectation for all. Here at Burnt Mill, we love to showcase how our students achieve the best in all they endeavour. Each student is defined by his or her own effort and progress and not that of a label.”

The Rev Jokey was so impressed with what she saw, she sent a note of thanks to the school, as well as Tweeting about the experience.

She said: “I had a very uplifting and interesting afternoon and it would give me confidence in recommending you to parents.

“Your passion for the SEND pupils was clear and it was very heartening to see the positive relationships they had with you.

“Hopefully we can find other ways of working together to support our young people and our community.”
