Hair-raising ball raises funds
Posted: 6th February 2020A celebratory ball turned into quite a hair-raising experience for some.
Year 11 students at Burnt Mill Academy came together for a celebration of all they have achieved so far.
Seen as a middle ground between the official celebration assembly with headteacher awards and the end of year prom, the celebration ball gave students an opportunity to let their hair down before the lead-up to the summer’s exams.
For deputy head boy Klary Rikhotso and classmate Shreyas Pouli, it was an opportunity to literally let their hair down – or, have it shaved off!
Head boy Asa Fletcher-Snow shaved the boys’ heads to raise money for charity.
Francis Collins, associate headteacher, said: “This is the second year we have held the celebratory ball as it proved so popular last year.
“The Year 11s had had two weeks of mock exams and so were extremely tired. It was a way of them celebrating their hard work and dedication. We expect a lot from them, but it is not all about exams; there has to be some down time, some time to celebrate their achievements, which is what this was about.”
Students enjoyed candyfloss, sponge-throwing at teachers, karaoke and a DJ at the carnival themed event organised by the members of the Student Senior Leadership Team.
All money raised from the party – through raffling off items donated by local companies including Tesco, Nando’s, JD Sport and Creams - was donated to St Clare Hospice, Harlow.
