Students Visit House of Commons & House of Lords
Posted: 27th January 2025Thirty Year 10 GCSE students were accompanied to the Education Parliment Centre and Palace of Westminster.
Pupils began their day with a fully immersive video on the history of Parliament from the Magna Carta (1215) to present day, supporting both their Citizenship and History GCSE studies. Pupils were reminded at the end of the video that the future of Parliament was in the hands of their generation, prompting thoughts and discussions of careers in politics for the first time that day.
Pupils were then escorted by their tour guides around the parliamentary buildings. We were fortunate enough to see both chambers; the House of Lords and the House of Commons. This time pupils were also invited to sit in the public gallery of the House of Commons and listen to some of the Private Member's Bills being read. Pupils caught the end of the reading for the Climate and Nature Bill read by Dr Roz Savage; an engaging speaker who reminded the house of the fragile nature of our existence and ecosystems against US President Donald Trump's instruction to "drill baby, drill".
Just before leaving, pupils spotted MP and Reform member Nigel Farage in attendance; sparking and interesting discussion about the current situation of left and right politics in the UK. Pupils finished the day in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Westminster Hall where they were greeted by their own MP for Harlow Chris Vince.
Mr Vince was kindly able to spare a few minutes from discussion about the future of Harlow, including his push for better transport links and investment in the Princess Alexandra hosptial. We thank Mr Vince for his time and answering questions about his decision to become an MP.
