80% A* - C grades incl. English & Maths

Posted: 24th August 2015

In addition to the above, almost half of the students leaving Burnt Mill Academy this summer scored A* and A grades in their GCSE exams.

An impressive 42% of students at the school, in First Avenue, Harlow, achieved at least one top grade.

Star student Harry Grace not only has a bumper crop of eight A* and A grade GCSE results to celebrate, but he also scored an A grade in A-level maths last week, after taking the exam two years early.

The 16-year-old, from Harlow, said: “I got an A* in maths in Year 8 and have kept  going since then with private tutoring given to me at school. The school has been so good; making sure all through Year 11 I had enough work to help me achieve my best.

“I am now going to Bishops Stortford Sixth Form to study A-levels in further maths, chemistry, physics and computing.”

Overall, a total of 80% of Burnt Mill students achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Vladislav Mezentsev, who joined Burnt Mill in Year 9 from Russia, bagged an impressive 11 A* and A grades. The 16-year-old, who is going on to Boys High to study chemistry, biology, physics and maths mechanics A-levels, said: “I feel great!

“When I joined in Year 9, I wasn’t very good at some subjects, including maths. These results are down to pure hard work and the support my teachers have given me. The teachers have kept pushing me and I have achieved an A* in maths as a result. It was a lot of pressure, but it has all been worthwhile.

“I am thinking about going into medicine in the future.”

Other impressive results include –

  • 11 A* and A grades – Naomi Matu
  • 10 A* and A grades – Gabriele Kurpyte
  • 9 A* and A grades – Ellie Eastman, Robin Gibbs, Alan Kong, Jack Shury, Joe Sims, Leon Topley and Abbie Williams
  • 8 A* and A grades – Luke Dalby, Ashleigh Darling, Connie Farrance, Morgan Redman
  • 7 A* and A grades – Rebecca Smith
  • 6 A* and A grades – Holly Street and Penny Walker
  • 5 A* and A grades – Phoebe Bush, Lucy Forrow, Cameron Fuller, Emily Harrison, Kieran Milrose, Svetlana Sucikova and Georgia White

Ashleigh Darling, 16, from Harlow, was expecting to scrape through her exams after being poorly for much of Year 10. Instead, she is in the top performers list with eight A* and A grades.

She said: “It feels weird to be one of the top students. I have never done that well. After missing so much school in Year 10, I spent Year 11 staying at school until 9 o’clock at night and worked my butt off. I was expecting to achieve B, C and maybe D grades.

“It has all paid off. I am so over-the-moon!”

Ashleigh will study government and politics, physics and ethics, sociology and music at Presdales Sixth Form in Ware.

The school has been flying high in recent years since Helena Mills arrived and turned it into an Ofsted-rated Outstanding school with among the best GCSE results in the country.

Ms Mills, head of all Burnt Mill Co-operative Academy Trust schools, said: “We are delighted that yet again more than 80% of our children have left us with five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths.

“We have created a work ethic among this year group which will carry them forward in all careers and studies in the future.
“I am delighted these results have opened doors to children which will enable them to follow their dreams. We are a dream factory and Mr Blaney and I are already looking at how we can help all our other children achieve their dreams in the years to come.”

John Blaney has recently been appointed head of school at Burnt Mill to enable Ms Mills to focus her attention on all six of the BMAT schools.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results. The fact we have managed to sustain the results at 80% for the second year is fantastic. We are thrilled for each and every student.”
