Students earn scholarship titles
Posted: 18th October 2017Independent learning is earning young students geography and history scholarship titles.
Year 7 and 8 students at Burnt Mill Academy are taking on six-week research projects as part of a scheme which was successfully trialled last year.
After the six weeks, students will present their findings on a GCSE topic and be rewarded with the title of scholar, a badge, certificate and voucher.
Kayleigh Trainor, head of humanities, said: “The idea of the scholarship project is to promote more independent learning as well as getting them engaged and ready for their GCSEs. It also promotes their knowledge of a topic they are studying beyond the classroom.
“During the trial of the project last year, students came back excited to tell everyone what they had discovered during their research. That, in itself, builds on their public speaking experience and allows them to put their own stamp on things.”
Students have previously presented via video blog, collage and reports.

More students will be picked to take part every six weeks so all will get to take part through the year.
