Key Stage 3 Leaders
Posted: 10th November 2017Responsibility around school is being given to a younger group of students for the first time.
Burnt Mill Academy has a Student Senior Leadership Team (SSLT) made up of Year 11 students who have roles to play around the school.
Last year, for the first time, similar responsibilities were given to younger students in Year 8 and the scheme proved so successful, it has become a permanent fixture.
More than 80 students completed applications to become Key Stage 3 (KS3) leaders and 40 sat interviews this year. A team of 14 leaders have now been appointed.
Helen Roper, head of Key Stage 3, said: “The plan was to have ten KS3 leaders, but the standards of the applications were so high we have picked a few more.
“There has been a real buzz around the application process this year. The students are desperate to do well and to show how good they are, as well as to push for higher achievements. They want to help other students and the school and are very proud of that. They are seeing this as a stepping stone to getting onto the SSLT, to being head boy or head girl.
“It’s an opportunity to extend our younger students and to prepare them as our future leaders. It will teach them how to present themselves when they are applying for courses and for jobs. We want to give them these skills early.
“This group of students will be responsible for various events, functions, helping younger students with their homework and keeping display board up to date and engaging. They are also working on their ideas, including a worry box and interview practise for their peers.”
KS3 leaders are Poppy Hazle, Mohit Patil, Kayla Hassan, William Robertson, Beverley Boadu, Michael Salter, Matas Buitkus, Tintswalo Rikhotso, Toms Xavi, Lauren Burgess, Morein Abdelmalek, Dennis Bubutanu, Jianne Gregorio and Freya Chapman. Lauren and Toms were voted by their peers as the lead students.
