New sport clubs launched to boost confidence

New sport clubs launched to boost confidence

Posted: 23rd October 2019

Children who may lack confidence in taking part in sporting competitions are thriving at their own clubs.

Students who attend nurture classes at Burnt Mill Academy are finding their feet at the newly launched sport clubs.

A whole programme of sporting events – including rugby, football, badminton, table tennis, multi-gym, boccia and athletics – has been put together and changes each week to give students a wide range of activities to try.

Jamie Daly, PE teacher, said: “Students within our nurture classes may not always have the confidence to get involved in PE lessons. We have therefore launched nurture sports clubs for those who would like to try their hand at sport in a different environment.

“Students may find they want to continue a particular sport outside of school as a result of these sessions; that would be fantastic.

“Burnt Mill is amazing at getting everyone together and working together, no matter if you are the best in the class at football or the one who has never kicked a ball in their life. This school is great at getting everyone to mingle.

“Our nurture clubs simply give students time to do their own thing if they want to and to work on the sports they might not have done in their PE lessons. We have been doing this kind of thing for years, but we are just keen to do even more of it now.”

Every three weeks, the school is now holding house competitions for the whole school.

Mr Daly said: “I want students in our nurture classes to do more. They are all part of a house and I want them to be actively involved. Without a doubt, by taking part it will help them with the rest of their schooling. If they feel they have accomplished something, their attitude in every lesson will improve.”
